Get ready to become stronger, more relaxed and less anxious you.

But before we dive into the article, let's quickly explain why everyone experiences anxiety.

Anxiety is a natural primate response designed to help us avoid danger. It triggers one of three reactions: fight, flight, or freeze, which help us respond quickly to potential threats.

This natural response is controlled by a part of the brain called the amygdala. The amygdala acts faster than our logical brain, the frontal cortex, which can lead to anxiety over non-threatening situations.

Rapid waves of anxiety often trigger a cycle of worry, doubt, recurring thoughts, challenges to self-esteem, intrusive thoughts, rumination and persistent feelings of fear. Now that we've covered this, let's talk about 10 effective tips to help you manage and reduce your anxiety.

[Tip 1: Make Eye Contact]

Making eye contact in social situations can alleviate feelings of isolation. Aim for natural, friendly eye contact, aiming not to stare, briefly connecting with the person you're speaking to. This will allow you to notice if the other person is up for further conversation or not.

[Tip 2: Limit Caffeine Intake]

While a cup of coffee might give you a quick boost, too much caffeine can increase heart rate and anxiety. If you’re naturally anxious, cut back on caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea, Coca Cola, and energy drinks. Opt for herbal teas or decaffeinated options. Excessive caffeine intake can also affect your sleep, making you feel sluggish the next morning and increasing your anxiety about life tasks.

[Tip 3: Eat Regularly]

Deprivation of food and water can trigger anxiety as it’s one of our main needs as humans. Even when cutting weight or reducing calories, still maintain regular meals. Ensure you consume essential nutrients like protein, carbs, healthy fats, and fibre. Regular eating keeps your body and mind stable and functioning at an optimal level.

[Tip 4: Exercise]

Exercise is great for both our body and mind, releasing endorphins that lift your mood. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or a gym session, find something you enjoy and make it part of your routine. After exercise, your heart rate will naturally decrease, relieving prior anxious feelings.

[Tip 5: Declutter and Get Organized]

A hectic lifestyle can contribute to anxiety. Decluttering your space, making a plan, and getting organised can reduce it. As many people say, when you have enough tasks to focus on, you won’t have time to worry. However, take some time during the day to notice and assess how you feel, as repressed feelings or a massive workload can lead to anxious and avoidant behaviours.

[Tip 6: Confront Your Fears with Compassion]

To deal with anxiety you must sometimes Identify and understand your fears, and when they stemmed from. Reflect on situations or memories that trigger anxiety. By acknowledging these fears with compassion, you can begin to unravel their grip on your life. Challenge worry with rationality and kindness, realising you have the strength to overcome your fears.

[Tip 7: Face Your Fears]

As the old saying goes, If you’re afraid, do it anyway Avoidance causes more anxiety in the long run. Confront fear head-on, viewing it as a chance for personal development. Always push yourself to step outside your comfort zone, this way you are always expanding your horizons. However, be mindful of your limits, if overwhelming anxiety persists, it’s okay to prioritise your well-being.

[Tip 8: Take a Social Media Detox]

Social media can increase anxiety as we see things such as fake news, bullying, harassment, war and crime on a daily basis. We also see comments and other nonsensical things designed to trigger negative emotional responses. Take a break, go outside, exercise, and spend time with friends in person. Real-life connections are invaluable for mental health.

[Tip 9: Set Goals and Take Action]

Anxiety can sometimes stem from worries about things such as health, family, finance and housing.  Focus on the present moment, breathe, unwind and think about times you overcame adversity. Then you can create a list of your current goals and aim to make extra progress toward achieving them. This can reduce anxiety as you’ll be too busy to worry. But don’t overdo it. Exhaustion is a real thing, so make sure you're getting plenty of healthy rest too.

[Tip 10: Seek Professional Help]

If your symptoms peak, seek professional help. If fear and anxiety affect your daily life, don’t hesitate.
Visit your local GP, public mental health centre or book an appointment with a private therapist or counsellor. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication for anxiety, but weigh the pros and cons as prolonged use can cause adverse effects.
